On Wednesday, July 27th, our beloved brother Dr. Ron Sider, suddenly passed away. He is survived by Arbutus, his wife of 59 years, his sons, Ted and wife Jill, Michael and wife Randi, his daughter Sonya and husband Ben, and 7 grandchildren whom he adored and delighted in. Ron was known around the world as a gifted author, speaker and passionate advocate for justice. He was a prophet, calling the Church to faithfulness to our Lord Jesus in our words and actions. He was fearless in advocating for the poor and marginalized around the world.
We at Oxford Circle Mennonite Church knew him as a joyful, caring, and wise servant. He enjoyed playing with young children in the nursery so parents could worship. He could be found wiping tables or washing dishes after a potluck lunch. He and Arbutus opened their home, hosting people for meals, small group meetings, and even a place to live for those who needed it. He was generous with his time, his abilities and influence, his money, his prayers, and his love for Christ.
Ron was instrumental in the development of Oxford Circle Christian Community Development Association, linking us with resources, advocating for OCCCDA, and sharing his expertise. He served on the board and was a source of encouragement as he consistently prayed for this organization. He was thrilled that our congregation was able to birth this ministry and delighted in all that it is doing.
Ron was also an encourager. He consistently noticed people, prayed for people, reached out to people, counseled, gave helpful feedback and suggestions. Just as he delighted in the growth and development of his grandchildren, so he delighted in the growth and development of the people in our congregation.
Since the pandemic, Ron and Arbutus have remained faithful with their attendance both online and, when circumstances allowed, in person. We will greatly miss him. Many people around the world are expressing their admiration for Ron and his work. We gladly join the chorus in saying, “Well done, our good and faithful brother and servant of Jesus Christ.”
